Harald zur Hausen is a scientist who encountered great opposition during his work. He proposed that cervical cancer, the second most common cancer of women, is caused by a viral infection and not, like the majority of scientific contemporaries supposed, by endogenous disorder, genetic predisposition, pollution or other environmental reasons. Nonetheless he worked for decades on identification, isolation and characterisation of the human papilloma virus (HPV) against the wind of the mainstream. He detected HPV to be a heterogeneous family of viruses and only some of them cause cancer.
