STUDY ON POLLEN VIABILITY IN SUNFLOWER (Helianthus annuus. L)

POLLEN viability is a prerequisite for successful seed set. The pollen, which appears morphologically healthy, may not germinate and fail to fertilize the ovules, resulting in low or no seed set. It is, therefore, necessary to test the viability of pollen grains in an artificial media. The longevity of pollen grains in storage can be helpful in materializing the crosses between the desirable parents, which are not synchronized in flowering. Hence, the different methods of pollen viability tests wereevaluated to test the pollen viability both in laboratory and field condition.
