EFFECT OF HERBICIDES ON WEED CONTROL AND SEEDLING GROWTH IN CHILLI NURSERY

WEEDS pose a major problem in chilli nursery beds as it is difficult to remove the weeds by handweeding. Weed infestation causes weak and lanky growth, which pose problems in establishment of crop in the main field. Use of herbicides holds some promise in controlling the weeds. It is necessary to findout dosage, time of application of suitable herbicide and possible damage to young chilli seedlings Raghavaiah and Sannitaabu (1986) have reported the use of diphera-mid for effective control of weeds in tobacco nursery. Trifluralin and bensulide are reported to be used before transplantation of chilli in main field (Rao, 1983). However, no such work is reported in chilli nursery. Hence this study was initiated.
