Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNA) is a method used worldwide for the diagnosis of palpable and non-palpable lesions in various organs. Despite being one of the most economical and reliable diagnostic procedures, in recent years there have been many attempts to replace FNA with a biopsy-gun approach, especially in breast andarostate cytology. According to some authors, the more expensive core needle biopsy procedure is attractive because, it v provides more material, permits more ancillary techniques, and does not require cytology training to interpret.1 Probably, only the last of these reasons is correct.
