Many wood properties are changed by its modification.As a result,all types of wood,the wood with high strength properties included,can be used for different applications.The composites consisting of synthetic polymers and natural organic materials used as fillers find large utilisations.Most frequently,they are added to the polymer as sawdust and wood fibers.This type of polymer composites provides the possibility of carrying out prior purposeful modifications of the components,in accordance with the exploitation requirements for the material.The purpose of the present investigation was to modify the wood and the wood flour with maleic anhydride,and to study their properties and applications.The modification was carried out with 5,10 and 15% solution of maleic anhydride,in acetone,under different conditions,the modified wood flour being characterized by IR-spectra.It was proved that the maleic anhydride esterifies the free hydroxylic groups of the wood components.The strength properties of the modified wood were studied,the good anti-swelling effect and the high increase of impact strength being evidenced.Composites of polypropylene and modified wood flour were obtained and studied.Improvement in some of their physical and mechanical properties was observed during the tests carried out.
