The cervical screening programme has relied on the clinical supervision of cervical cytology as the means of identifying potential cervical pre-cancer in asymptomatic women since its origins in the 1960s. Cytopathologists were pivotal in creating the programme and The Royal College of Pathologists, alongside the British Society for Clinical Cytology, has continually worked to develop and refine the National Health Service launched in 1988 cervical screening programme to become the world class service that we enjoy today.
