The concept of utilization of hybrids for commercial rearings dates back to 1922. Karnataka has the distinction of introducing cross between Pure Mysore and Japanese races for the first time in the country (Nanavathy, 1965) and thus, the tradition ofrearing hybrids was profitable to pure line (Datta, 1984). Silkworm rearers, the technical staff of seed areas as well as the commercial seed producers are having a feeling that the hybrid layings prepared from seed cocoons produced in a particular areas yield superior results in terms of economic traits (Subramanya and Sreerama Reddy, 1986). Further, Dilipkumar (1997) opined that the characteristics of seed cocoons procured from different seed areas have considerable impact on seed technological and grainage traits as the seed areas vary among ecological and geographical considerations. Hence, the study was undertaken to identify the best cross to maximize egg production.
