Are all thyroid papillae malignant? An unusual pitfall in FNAC.

Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) has been advocated as the first line of investigation in the assessment of thyroid nodules. The reported sensitivity and specificity in the literature varies between 53-95% and 52-100% respectively.1"3 Diagnostic pitfalls in FNAC of thyroid have been recognized.4"6 We describe an unusual pitfall and compare the cytologi-cal findings with cytology from papillary carcinoma of the thyroid.
