CONSERVING THE FUTURE OF HERITAGE TOURISM

Built in the mid-16th century using stone from the disused Lindisfarne Priory, the castle is more commonly known for the reimagining of the site in the 1900s, carried out by architect Sir Edwin Lutyens for Edward Hudson, the founder of Country Life magazine. The exposed location of the Grade I listed building overlooking the North Sea has seen it subjected to the ravages of wind, rain and salt throughout its 460-year history, and action needed to be taken to improve the building fabric and safeguard it for the future.
