CENTRAL VENTILATION IS GOING PLACES

Ivor Matanle looks at some recent installations and draws some conclusions It is arguable that central ventilation systems occupy now a similar place in the public consciousness as central heating did fifty years ago. Then, central heating was something that most people knew about, few people had in their homes and relatively few rated as a high priority for expenditure. OK, fifty years ago was an exceptional time, when people struggled with post-war austerity, but the comparison is still valid because, only ten years later, in the early sixties it was almost unthinkable to build a house without central heating. By 1965, people with older houses were falling over themselves in the rush to get central heating installed. That same transition is under way now with central extract and central ventilation - only this time, it won't take ten years. Developers are realising in their droves that central extract and central ventilation systems provide major improvements in living conditions at minimal cost. Perhaps more importantly, new home buyers are beginning to realise that it makes sense to buy a house with central ventilation now, because houses without it will be at a disadvantage in the second-hand market in five years time.
