With landfill taxes due to increase again next year, the issue of how waste is handled and managed is an increasingly prominent one for building designers and engineers. Currently, the levy stands at 72 pounds per tonne but, with uncertainty over what the Government will do once the escalator ends in 2014, property managers need to think creatively about their waste streams. From a building engineer perspective, waste storage should be taken into account when planning for new buildings and facilities. Can designated recycling facilities comprising loading bays; holding areas for waste containers, bailers and compactors, be incorporated at an early stage to ensure the waste management process is as efficient as possible?
