Professionalism in practice

It is conceivable that the NMC envisages that the toolkit might reduce the numbers of fitness to practise cases it adjudicates, which occur because of unprofessional behaviour. To put this in context, the NMC received 5415 new fitness to practice referrals for the year 2015-2016, a figure which has been rising year on year (NMC, 2016). The NMC's Code (NMC, 2015), details the professional standards that uphold professional nursing and midwifery practice. Its framework, which is structured around the four themes of prioritising people, practising effectively, preserving safety and the promotion of professionalism and trust, can be used by all registrants for revalidation. The new toolkit is clearly intended to act hand in glove with the application of the Code. The NMC quest to enhance professionalism is focused on ensuring that its registrants always deliver holistic care to patients and their families and carers that is safe, caring, effective and oriented around the achievement of optimum health and wellbeing.
