As a third-year nursing student at the University of Salford, I am nearing the end of my pre-registration programme of study. In my previous career, working in an administrative role for an out-of-hours service provider, I never worked in any type of clinical area, so setting off on a journey into nursing (with real-life patients) was quite a daunting prospect for me. Having completed an undergraduate degree as a young adult, I was aware of the academic arena I was throwing myself into, but was very under-prepared for the clinical aspect of my training. In my previous education and throughout my life, I have always been taught by those around me to maintain a strong sense of integrity, regardless of what I am doing. I chose to take this principle with me into my nursing practice, rather foolishly unaware of how it could potentially influence the care of my patients.
