Creating a twisty Itoigawa juniper, Juniperus chinensis 'Itoigawa', shohin from a cutting is easier than you think. This article will take you through the process step by step. Using the techniques I will explain here, it will take about 6 years.Here in my nursery, I have lots of Itoigawa material that I can and do take cuttings from throughout the year. In my experience, they root well whether you use rooting hormone or not. Also, I have been able to successfully root small, stillgreen cuttings up to 1 inch in diameter. The good news is that the entire process can be done while they are growing in pots. I have tried growing them in the ground and encountered way too many issues with wind, animals and kids. My biggest problem is,keeping the final product in stock. Here at my nursery, they sell as soon as they start showing potential. I really must make an effort to keep some in order to show just what can be done in such a short amount of time.
