Soil Concepts:Part two - Between the Grains

In the last article, we covered some of the basic elements of capillary action and how it impacts the distribution of water in our soil. We've learned that the size of the pore space is critical - the amount of water in the pore spaces will go down with increasing pore size. And we've also learned that gravity is important - there will be more water at the bottom of a soil column and less at the top. But what is it about the substrate we use that determines pore size? How do we describe it? And what's good for our trees? That's the subject of this article.
