Fossil pollen identifies the white spruce, Piceaglauca, as the dominant species in the spruce tundra existing before the North American landscape warmed from the last ice age. White spruce remains the dominant tree of the Great Boreal forest. Today white spruce extends north to the limits of tree growth in northern Canada and Alaska and extends southward into the United States only in the Great Lakes region, northern New England and, to a limited extent, the northern Rocky Mountains in Montana and the Black Hills of South Dakota and Wyoming.
