As early as junior high school, I remember being fascinated with science. I got into the habit of going to the local branch of the library and somehow got into science fiction. I started reading everything I could get my hands on. My mother was a nurse, and my father was an inventor. He built an autogyro, a hybrid between a helicopter and a plane. So I was exposed to the invention and medical environments early on in my life. I was always a good student, but it wasn't until my second year in college, when I took a course in organic chemistry, that I was "hooked." I guess the way my brain works and the way organic chemistry works was a good match. From then on, I really applied myself. When I was a graduate student at Caltech in Pasadena, CA, I found out that 1 liked genetics and biophysics more than biochemistry, so I became a molecular biologist.
