Prostate cancer: balancing the need to inform with the patient's wish to know.

Within the framework of pathways and prescriptions, information is conceptualized mainly as the provision of standardized written material. While the need for high quality written information is unarguable, we have found that men with prostate cancer evaluate information in terms of a hierarchy based on type and, in the case of verbal information, status of the information provider [8]. Verbal information given by a consultant ranked highest, while information in leaflets ranked above television programmes and the media but below all verbally given information.
