You might have noticed them: weird, bright growths on wild roses. Like scraps from fuzzy jumpers, snagged on thorns, they catch your eye and look out of place in the hedgerow. They’ve always fascinated me. When, as a child, I asked what they were, the answer - “robin’s pincushions” - was mysterious. As if that explained anything!
