In the US, bamboo serves many purposes. Landscaping with bamboo is becoming increasingly popular, as is growing bamboo for poles and craft supplies. The archery industry and the music industry, to name but two ventures, have benefitted from the bamboo introduced to America in the late 19th century. Bowyers use bamboo facings on their hand-crafted bows. Madake (Phyllostachys bambusoides) is their bamboo of choice, the same timber bamboo coveted by makers of the shakuhachi, the Japanese flute.
