Esophageal stent placement for malignant stricture (Figs. 1 and 2) is usually performed for palliative treatment to avoid the side effect of severe dysphagia. Its clinical efficacy is based not only on the disappearance of dysphagia but also on the quantitative calories ingested. Palliative treatment without any other radio-chemotherapy is commonly adopted either when survival is less than 3 months or in patients with severe comorbidity. At present, the unsolved question of esophageal stent during malignant stricture is the relevance of stent as a "bridge to surgery or other radio-chemotherapeutic treatment efficacy."
