Mexico ethanol usage slow to grow as MTBE remains dominant gasoline additive

HOUSTON (ICIS)--Ethanol-blended gasoline has been sluggish to take market share in Mexico, and despite efforts by regulators to loosen biofuel restrictions, methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) remains the most dominant gasoline oxygenate in the country. Oxygenates are fuel additives that boost the octane content of gasoline, allowing for a more complete combustion and reduced tailpipe emissions.
