Interrelation between nitrogen status of the plants, leaf chlorophyll and grain yield in various winter wheat cultivars.

The correlation between chlorophyll and leaf nitrogen contents was investigated in 24 winter wheat cultivars grown in field plots in the Ukraine in 1993 and 1994. Leaf chlorophyll content, leaf nitrogen content and grain yield were closely correlated, and during grain ripening, these correlations were cultivar-specific, and were maintained although leaf chlorophyll and nitrogen contents were declining. Possibilities for using these correlations in remote sensing to predict crop N status and yieldsare discussed.
