Within laser cutting, there are two main technologies: gas (CO_2) and solid state (fiber, YAG and disc). Fiber lasers are getting a lot of attention lately because they offer the speed and cut quality of CO_2, but cost significantly less to operate and maintain. When compared to its solid-state counterparts, YAG and disc, fiber laser is preferable because the beam stays inside the fiber. This reduces potential problems at air/glass interfaces and offers the potential for higher beam quality and efficiency.
