Sunnen products co., a leading supplier of engine-rebuilding and bore-sizing and finishing equipment encountered a problem during a machining project for one of its customers. The awkward setup of the workpice made it unstable and difficult to machine efficiently. To complete the project on time and at the level of precision required, sunnen had to find a solution. Sunnen needed to mill five slots on a part, each 8 in length, to a semifinished state. The workpiece material was low-ally 4140 steel, with a hardness of 35 HRC. The part was held between centers on an indexer and was somewhat unstable. The challenge was to find tools that could cut efficiently with the part held in this manner.
