Humans have an inherent ability to encode the directional information of an incident sound in an acoustical transfer function The head, external ears, and torso of a listener can transform the spectral information of a sound as it travels from a sound source to the eardrum [1] The head-related transfer function (HRTF) is used to describe this physical transformation.
