Barriers are commonly used to reduce noise from road traffic. Since the invention of an absorbing cylindrical edge by Fujiwara and Ono [1], it has been widely recognized that an absorber on a top edge of the barrier reduces diffracted sound. Subsequently, various barriers with diffraction-reducing devices, including interferers or active noise control systems without any absorbing material, have been developed [2]; such barriers are generally called ‘‘edge-modified barriers.’’
