John George Haldane Cook (BSc, PhD, MIBiol), born in Hull 1929, grew up in Doncaster where he was the first boy to transfer from the Central State School to Doncaster Grammar School. With the middle name Haldane he was clearly destined to make a career in science, which he did with distinction. His leadership potential was recognised by him being made House Captain and his prowess in rugby union by representing the school, and later his army regiment, in the sport.
