Taking a Project Knowledge Management System (PKMS) to the Next Level

During the development and execution of capital projects, the process of capturing and retaining empirical project information will ultimately enhance the project life-cycle. This is accomplished by feeding key project information back to development teams and enabling management to make good business decisions at the front-end. The development of a Project Knowledge Management System (PKMS) facilitates effective analysis and supports a validation process. Depending on a company's size and requirements, a PKMS can initially be developed in a static database with ad-hoc reporting ability. As the availability and demand for historical project information grows, consideration should be given to migration of the PKMS from a static to a relational database with enhanced functions and abilities. This paper will review the methodology that has been used by a pipeline company to migrate their static PKMS system to a relational database. Challenges and lessons learned arising from the business requirements definition, buy vs. build decision making, migration of data, and validation process will be covered.
