Managing the use of available technology in critical care is challenging and resource intensive. There are many new technological interventions in health care and not every available technology is necessary for optimal patient care. The challenge is to apply technology judiciously to improve patient care. Nurses in critical care are bombarded with options, often making it difficult to discern what is the best technology to choose for given applications. High-tech applications are available for critical care education and direct patient care. These technological devices are expensive and require extensive operator education. This column highlights an emerging technology available in critical care education-human patient simulation. It provides a summary of its use, some research highlights, defines strengths and limitations of this technology, and offers suggestions for future research.
