Earlier drilling effectively created a newcrop with very different weed, disease, pest and lodging control challenges, he says. "It demanded a bold new approach, with better varieties and altogether greater management precision. "This effort has certainly been rewarded and given far greater performance consistency from crop to crop and year to year." It widened the gap with second wheats. But Mr Angus is convinced this need not continue, especially as market prospects improve and better varieties are identified.
