Often overlooked, coating and laminating technology has for decades been a staple for converters. These days, such traditional techniques are finding new markets as consumers' taste changes. A good example is the massive growth seen in the flexible packaging sector typified by the stand-up pouch. Indeed, the growth seen across the pouch market in the US is forecast to reach US$10 billion by 2020, according to Freedonia. Converters are reacting to consumers' demand, and switching to this form factor. Subsequently, they are developing new laminating and coating techniques.
