Some forty years ago, the late Donald Eperson (1904-2001), reporting in The Mathematical Gazette (4) on classroom work with patterns among triangular numbers, thought to close with a related conjecture. Based on the empirical evidence, he wondered whether the sum of three consecutive squares is always the sum of three other different squares?
