High summer has at last arrived. Warmth and light envelop us. Nature's manifold colors, scents and sounds pour into the core of our being; everywhere there is abundance for all of our senses.The preschool child, pre-eminently a being of will, is deeply open to impressions from the world; his work is his play(2) The living earth offers continual opportunities for wonder and awe. The golden rays of sunshine weave together with the silver shimmering blue waters into the weft of summer's green to form amagic carpet upon which the young child's imagination may ride. An upturned stone or garden furrow reveals a host of small and scuttling creatures; rainbows of blossoms open wide to visits of bee and butterfly; birds flit elf-like to and fro, bunny noses twitch: everywhere wonder and awe provide a substantive basis for nourishing the small child(3).
