Report on the 1995 Meeting of the Conference for international DEMETER-Affairs in Jarna, Sweden

Thirty-nine participants from twenty-two countries attended the DEMETER-International meeting, held at Skillebyholm near Jarna from June 22nd through 25th The meeting was hosted by the Swedish Demeterforbundet and Skillebyholm, which is a Biodynamic farm, research, education, and conference centre Besides Skillebyholm there are numerous other Anthroposophical initiatives in and around Jarna that include several Biodynamic farms, the Rudolf Steiner Seminary, a Waldorf School, curative homes for the handicapped, a large flour mill for DEMETER grains, a medical clinic, medicinal herb gardens, stores, and a brand new WELEDA factory to serve all of the Scandinavian countries, the latter also located at Skillebyholm. Jarna is a rural community located about 25km south of Stockholm. It lies roughly on the same latitude as Anchorage, Alaska. The nordic summer had just burst forth with all its sudden might; only a few hours of cool twilight interrupted the long, mostly balmy days. Colorful flowers bloomed everywhere, and the air was filled with the scent of freshly cut hay. A more appropriate setting could hardly be imagined for any Biodynamic gathering. On Friday afternoon the meeting schedule was interrupted for a few hours, so that we could participateat the Swedish midsummer festival which was held on a park-like estate in Jarna. The pagan-rooted festival was a colorful and joyous affair with a Maypole raising, much singing, folkdancing, cakes, coffee, and other culinary delights.
