HIGH METHIONINE CORN

The following paper was given at the National. Organic Program meeting in Baltimore. Maryland, on May 28th, 2008. It has been slightly modified to include some background information. Eggs and poultry are now among the fastest growing products in theU.S. organic food sector.1 According to USDA Economic Research Service, organic layer and egg production in the nation tripled between 2000 and 2003 and quadrupled since then. Almost 40% of that production was located in Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota. Methionine is the first limiting amino acid for poultry health and egg production. Birds with inadequate methionine nutrition suffer from poor feather production, poor health, and low egg production. The need for methionine is met in feeds based on corn and soybeans by supplementing with synthetic DL methionine at about 0.1% of the ration.
