The following is an edited version of the keynote talk presented by the author at the Association's 2006 Annual Conference, held at Hawthorne Valley Farm in Ghent, NY. While somewhat lengthier than most pieces we publish, it touches on so much of thetheme of the conference - Building Sustainable Communities: Agriculture as Foundation for Social Change - that we have decided to print it in its entirety. We hope that with the onset of colder weather our readers will have the leisure to delve into Jean-Paul's ideas.
