EUROPEAN beet production faces radical and painful restructuring. That much is clear. So the challenge now must be to secure the best deal possible, and apply it uniformly across Europe, to leave a modern efficient EU industry. "We support a number ofthe EC's proposal, because we accept the sector must change," says British Sugar's Chris Carter. "There will be pain, because the proposal is so radical, but we would rather take the pain and do it right, rather than face an unsustainable future."
