In Southeast Pennsylvania, as the season moves towards Winter Solstice, and the days get shorter and colder, outdoor garden work stops in the garden for two or three months. Indoors, cozy and warm, resting the body, the gardener has time to think about life in order to learn from the experiences of the past growing season. This winter rest is holy, It is the seed for the new year, because, when the gardener reflects on what has been done, he or she will be able later in the winter to distill the experience gained into a work plan for next year's garden. A contemplative mood during early winter is the prerequisite for a good work plan.
