Lactate clearance and central venous oxygen saturation in early sepsis.

To the Editor: In their randomized controlled trial, Dr Jones and colleagues1 examined lactate clearance as an alternative to central .venous oxygen saturation (ScvO2) for monitoring in the early phase of severe sepsis. Monitoring of ScvO2 in the emergency department may be difficult to implement, and effective tools are needed to increase the overall adherence to Surviving Sepsis Campaign guidelines.2 However, the results of this study should be interpreted cautiously.
