Question Is celiac disease associated with increased mortality? Findings In this population-based cohort study of 49 & x202f;829 patients in Sweden with celiac disease followed up for a median of 12.5 years, the mortality rate compared with general population controls was 9.7 vs 8.6 deaths per 1000 person-years, a difference that was statistically significant. Meaning In a Swedish population, celiac disease was associated with a small but statistically significant increased mortality risk.
