摘要

A detailed understanding of which variants and genes (and the pathways and mechanisms they point to) are involved in both rare forms of hypertension and essential hypertension may lead to new and better prevention, diagnosis, and treatment options. These will be the future lessons of ge-nomics. Currently, however, many polymorphisms that are significantly associated with essential hypertension have very small effect sizes. A number of factors may explain this, but one is that the high prevalence of hypertension results from levels of gene X environment interaction effects that were not anticipated-but perhaps should have been.
