On the morning of Sept. 10, the year's first major storm, Hurricane Florence, was declared a category 3 storm as winds of 115 miles/hour (184km/h) barreled down the Carolinas. The US state of North Carolina was expected to be one of the hardest-hit areas, if the storm did not veer out to sea. The NC Petroleum & Convenience Marketers Association reported that a bit of typical panic-buying tightened supplies but did not lead to shortages, and that members were taking early precautions after an emergency declaration was made late in the previous week.
