On July 1,cruise operator Hurtigmten announced its Koald Amundsen hybrid cruise ship is set to undertake its maiden voyage. The hybrid ship operates partially by battery power, though its engines use mostly marine gasoil. The company believes CO2 emissions will be reduced by 20% compared to a ship run completely on gasoil.Hurtigruten's CEO,Daniel Skjeldam, told Reuters the battery packs on the ship would allow it to operate 100% on battery power for 45-60 minutes. The company will take delivery of another hybrid battery-powered ship later this year that has a battery pack with double the capacity as the one installed on the Roaid Amundsen.
