A team from the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Dalian, China) have develop a new process to convert waste biomass (mainly cellulose) into a high-density renewable jet fuel product that contains more polycycloalkane compounds. In the new process, the cellulose is subjected to hydrogenolysis to yield 2,5-hexanedione. The 5-methylfurfural generated during the hydrogenolysis is further converted to yield more 2,5-hexanedione. The resulting 2,5-hexanedione is then reacted with H2 to form a mixture of C12 and C_(18) polycycloalkanes with a low freezing point and density that is about 10% higher than conventional jet fuel. The team adds that the process also lowers energy consumption compared to conventional jet fuel production processes.
