Drilling rights for the 1.56MM-acre coal plain in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, which has been previously been off-limits for upstream activity, could potentially be up for auction by 4Q 2020. Under the approved plan by the US Interior Department, 23% of the land available for leasing, or around 359K actress, will be off-limits for surface activity. In addition, 37% of the region, or roughly 577K acres, will be subject to timing limitations in order protect the environment. According to the US Geological Survey, the coastal plain may contain up to 4.3-11.8MM bbl of recoverable crude.
