At least $1 trillion needed to halve shipping GHG emissions by 2050

This is the viewpoint expressed in a joint statement issued by the Global Maritime Forum,World Economic Forum,and Friends of Ocean Action,which have formed the Getting to Zero Coalition.According to a study from the Energy Transitions Commission and UMAS for the Getting to Zero Coalition,$1-1.4 trillion will need to be invested from 2030-50 to reduce the shipping industry's GHG emissions by 50%,which equates to $50-70B/y.In order to achieve full decatbonization by 2050,$1.4-1.9 trillion in investment will be needed.Land-based infrastructure-including storage-low-carbon fuel production capacity,and bunkering facilities will account for 87% of a hypothetical investment.On the other hand,only 13% of investments will be for vessels,which may include machinery to use low-carbon fuels,retrofits,improved energy efficiency,etc.
