Fibromyalgia tender points at examination sites specified by the American College of Rheumatology criteria are almost universally myofascial trigger points.

This is a study of the presence of myofascial trigger points at the predetermined examination sites in persons who have fibromyalgia (FM), diagnosed on the basis of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria for the classification of FM published in 1990 [1]. In this study, the predetermined sites that have been selected for examination of trigger points according to the ACR criteria are examined for myofascial trigger points. The 18 predetermined sites each were evaluated manually, by pain pressure algometry, and by electromyography (EMG), except for the second parasternal intercostal space, where EMG potentially is dangerous because of the proximity of the underlying lung.
