Case-based learning: Meningitis

Meningitis is the second leading infection-related cause of death in children in the world, second only to pneumonia. It is responsible for more deaths than malaria, AIDS, measles and tetanus combined. The disease is more prevalent in children under the age of four years and in teenagers. In England, there has been a decline in confirmed cases of invasive meningococcal disease over the past two decades, from 2,595 cases in 1999/2000 to 755 cases in 2017/2018, which is a small increase from the 748 cases reported in 2016 and 2017.
