The Dardenne brothers, directors of Two Days, One Night, have already proved this with Rosetta in 1999, the story of an unemployed teenage girl, which contributed to increased legal protection for young workers in Belgium. In Two Days, One Night, Sandra, played with understated intensity by Marion Cotillard, has been on long-term sick leave with depression from her factory job in a Belgian town, and is just about to return to work. Her boss, realising that the business has been coping fine with 16 employees rather than 17, has told the rest of the workforce that they have a choice. If Sandra loses her job, they will get their bonus. If she stays, they will lose it. The bonus is ?1000, a huge sum if you are on a low wage. They have voted for the bonus.
